The Touch of Fall

Well, here it is 10:00 PM on a Thursday night and I am trying to come up with something significant to write about...but the brain is tired and nothing is grabbing me.  Do you ever get this way, with nothing coming forward, nothing significant happening in the ole noggin'?  I have been busy the last few days with clearing out the fading flowers in my flower pots and then traveling to the garden centers for fall flowers to replenish the empty pots to again bring color to the front porch.  Inside I have lugged the plastic tubs from the basement marked FALL to begin the change from spring/summer to fall/winter.  I enjoy adding these touches of Fall to my home, the golds, the burnish reds, the oranges all bring that feeling of warmth.  So for the last few days I have been in the "doing mode" instead of the "writing mode."

I recently bought a little book entitled "The Little Book of Answers" which is filled with all sorts of trivia.  Because Fall is almost here (Saturday, Sept. 22) and because the noggin' is not cooperating right now and I am not coming up with anything brilliant to write and since the stores are filled with everything Fall and Halloween right now I am digging into this little book of answers to tell you how the practice of "Trick or Treat" began....

When the Irish introduced Halloween to America, children celebrated with a night of mild vandalism. Their bag of "tricks" included breaking or soaping windows or overturning outdoor toilets.  Soon they realized that adults would offer them candy or other "treats" to stop these tricks.  They then offered the homeowner a choice of giving them goodies (treats) or suffer the consequences (tricks).  This mild blackmail demand came to be known as "trick or treat?"  Leave it up to those frisky Irish to come up with this tradition at Halloween.  A little piece of trivia to add to your bag of "tricks".

I am wishing you all a wonderful Fall and hope that you will only enjoy the treats of the season and not the tricks....!!

We have so enjoyed your participation in our Flickr group with your entries of "connections".  We still have a week left, so keep up the good work and we might just see you featured here.

I wish I could get in the 'doing' mood...I have been thinking of switching the sun porch and the front porch to 'Fall' but it is just not happening yet. I love the photos you chose to go with your post.

Your brain might have been weary but your post is perfect inspiration for moving into fall. I'm always reluctant to move forward into fall but your fabulous photos have given me just the kick in the pants that I need.

Let the fun begin!

:-D

You are so cute. FABULOUS 'punkin' photo! as well as the others too. I love that you find yourself stumped for ideas, as that is my typical "always" state. So you give me hope yet! Love how you gave us the history of Trick or treating :)

I loved reading about the history of trick or treating. Love your fall photos, they really get me in the mood for cozy sweaters, fireplaces, and hot cocoa!

Thanks for the history lesson...I know I'll be sharing it over and over in the coming days. I started my "fall cleaning" this week, so nice to see all the pretty scarfs and sweaters again.

Finally getting a chance to pop in here and wow, so glad I did! Your photos are gorgeous and I love all the gorgeous fall colors. No fall here yet -- over 100 today -- but I'll keep hoping. At least I can get out my fall decorations to get me in the mood. Thanks for the "history lesson" too!

Oh, that pumpkin photo again, love, love, love!! And I had no idea where trick or treating came about, so interesting, thanks for that tidbit. If I am ever on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, I hope they ask me that question! XO
