turning sixty

by cathy

You've got to go out on a limb sometimes because that's where the fruit is. ~ Will Rogers

Oh my gosh it is August already. August is my birthday month, and I turn 60 in just eleven days. Somehow I can't quite believe it! I had a friend tell me yesterday that once we reach 60 we can stop apologizing, we can say what is on our minds (with kindness of course) try new things just because we want to, and not worry about what others think. I like all of that permission!

I just finished a beautiful book called The Late Starters Orchestra by Ari L. Goldman. It is the true story of Goldman's passion for playing the cello; something he started as a young man and then put aside as he raised his family and worked. At the age of 59 he decides it is now or never and finds himself getting off an elevator in a Manhattan loft, his cello on his back, heading in to rehearse with The Late Starters Orchestra. "I've heard you play, and sweetheart you are not a musician," his wife, Shira tells him. But he follows his heart and sets a goal for himself to play a solo concert at his sixtieth birthday party. His kids question him and make other suggestions for the party and his wife just smiles. What follows is an amazing story full of hope, humor, determination, friendship and tons of passion and perseverance. I came away so moved and full of inspiration. Sixty is going to be grand I think.

With the start of August comes a bit of a break for us, but we do have some fun things planned for the flickr pool. We will be changing color themes each week during the month; posting the color in Friday's post. This week we start out with pink! Let's fill our pool with pink goodness!

Thanks for stopping by today,

Permission granted, Cathy! As one who has passed that milestone, I can tell you that it is liberating. Not permission to be obnoxious, just permission to be who and what you are. Even if you're a cellist. Or ... maybe a photographer? Happy Pink Week!

I am ahead of you - and I am loving my 60's . All that permission you are talking about is why I went to France instead of painting my house! Happy birthday - and I hope the 60s are all you want them to be!!

Passed that one a few years back myself (now don't you feel like the baby of the group?) and I can completely agree with Goldman. I think at sixty we begin (if we haven't already done so) to think of each birthday as a gift, as a chance to really live our lives the way we want to and to enjoy them. Early happy birthday hugs to you!

Happy coming Birthday!
Sixty bothered me, more than any other birthday, so far. I've survived, and will soon be entering the last year of my sixties. Then (gasp!) 70!
Enjoy it. Remember, every day counts...just like it did when we were 25. We're just wise enough to realize it now.

Happy Birthday, Cathy. Yes, it is time to enjoy the golden years (altho sometimes they do become just a wee bit tarnished)....It wasn't until my 60's that I developed my love of photography, began started my blog, meeting fellow bloggers in person,, and traveling by myself. So you have a lotta fun ahead, just enjoy each and every day and take big gulps of the blessings surrounding you!

Well Cathy, I can see I may need this book. I'm on my way to 60 but you'll beat me by 9 months. Have a great birthday!

Welcome to your sixties. I will be leaving the sixties next month but I can tell you that it has been a great decade. I call it the ME time. You finally get back time to indulge yourself and do exactly what you want. It's time to do those things you couldn't find time for before. All the time is yours.
