A Week at the Beach

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do
than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

Vacation . . . travel . . . trip . . . adventure.  There's just some magic about those words that make one's heart beat a little faster. New people, new places and new things to photograph. One of the things I love about traveling is the opportunity to shoot in new surroundings. When I know I'm going on a trip, the first thing I think about is what I'm going to try to capture while I'm there.

Having just come back from a week on the beach, vacation is definitely on my mind. This vacation was all about family, being together and enjoying each other's company. Leaving the heat of the desert behind and spending a week on the beach where we had to wear sweaters at night was definitely a treat. It was also a chance to see a new  place and rekindle that photography spark that seems to fade this time of year. I could spend endless amounts of time finding new ways to photograph the beach and everything I find there.

I was delighted to find that one of my favorite photographic subjects, flowers, were blooming everywhere! After a hot summer, there is next to nothing blooming in the desert so it was a real treat to have some flowers to photograph.

But as wonderful as it was, it's always good to get back home.

When my kids were young, returning from our annual beach vacation meant days of unpacking, laundry and cleaning the sand out of the car. Now, returning home means sleeping in my own bed and getting back to my usual routines again. Eating in restaurants is great but I'm always glad to return to my usual (if somewhat boring) eating habits. I suppose that means I'm getting old!

“No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home
and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow.” – Lin Yutang

How about you? What is your favorite thing about travel? Do you love to go and hate to come back or do you enjoy the return to routine when you come home? Where have you traveled to this summer? Share some shots in our Flickr gallery of your adventures and if your travel photography included some barns, be sure to tag them in the gallery for In Focus consideration. I'd love to see them. That way I can travel vicariously with you and still sleep in my own bed!

Don't forget you can still participate in Linda's linky party until September 2.  We are all having such a great time guessing the ends of everyone's stories! Why not join in with the fun?

Ahhh, my very favorite place to be in the whole world. This summer was our first family vacation in 9 years, but not because we don't like to travel. I have found that I like "traveling" my surrounding area in little day exursions though just as much. There is something about spontaneous exploration without to much expectation to keep things exciting . . . and well, still getting to sleep in one's bed at night! Love your photos, thanks for sharing your vaca with us.

Fabulous, fabulous beach photos and what terrific memories they will bring as time goes on. Thank you for sharing a bit of your vacation paradise with us. We didn't do our traditional beach vacay this year... :-( ... but we're heading to the coast of Maine in a few weeks. You've inspired me as I think about what wonderful new treasures I'll find with my camera. There is something about a camera and traveling ... they just seem to go together, don't you think? Whether in your own neck of the woods or further away.

Thanks for taking us along, Terri!

Beautiful work! I believe there is nothing as beautiful as the shore. Salt air cures all. Thanks for sharing.

Oh so happy to see your wonderful vacation pictures. I hope that everyone had a marvelous time, it's just so fun with family. The beach collage is just wonderful and those flowers are stunning. And I do have to agree with you about returning home, laying in your own bed, eating your own food (boring or not)...vacations are wonderful, but there is no place like home.

Oh yes, the fun of photographing our new surroundings. I love it too. You have taken some beautiful photos Terri, and then have arranged them so beautifully as well. I love going away, seeing new places, new things to photograph, but I do like to get back home and back to routines, and my own bed! I wasn't sure anyone else felt like that, since I always hear people saying, "I didn't want to come back." I thought maybe it was because, as a kid, I was extremely homesick when I went away - even with my own family! Good to know that I am not the only one. So glad you had a wonderful vacation, but also glad you're back! :)

Great photos Terri. I love going to new places and seeing new things but after a week or so I'm ready to come home and crash in my own bed. I usually need a few days at home before I go back to work as well. Glad you had a good vacation and you had cooler weather. Jeans and sweaters really?

Love going on vacation, seeing new sites, eating different foods. LOVE coming home to my bed, my stuff and not living out of a suitcase. I need both!
