Celebrating some snapshots of summer

by Kim

"Celebrate the sunrise"

"Then followed that beautiful season...Summer...
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape
Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood."

- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"Celebrate the ocean"

For me, the beach is synonymous with the celebration of summer...fun...and carefree days. I am blessed to live only 30 minutes from the beach and only 8 miles from my favorite sunrise spot.

But I have to admit I am always surprised and a lot perplexed by the number of people who have lived here all their lives, and either never or only occasionally take advantage of these beautiful surroundings.

"Celebrate the seaweed"

Beauty and awe surrounds us in our daily lives, right where we are. We are sometimes deceived into thinking that it is half way across the world, on a different continent, in some far and away exotic place. When in reality it is something we can find in our own backyard. And... it is, in the simple things of every day and will look a little different for all of us.

"Celebrate the wonder of flight"

I never tire of watching the birds work the beach, or the challenge of catching them in lightning fast flight.

"Celebrate little masterpieces"

Or catching hundreds of hermit crabs...all of them released back where they were found.

"Celebrate a treasure found"

Unless of course, you are lucky enough to find one that is unoccupied like this olive shell. Over the course of 5 years I have found only 9 and I remember when I found each one.

"Celebrate the spirit of a child"

Every time I get to the beach, every single time ... I feel like a little girl not quite sure where to start first. And definitely not afraid to get a little dirty digging in the sand. Complete with my modern day Princess Leia (from Star wars) hair do, and accompanied by my little blue net, I seem to set off a signal to the 10 and under group and before I know it I have plenty of helpers looking for hermit crabs or shaking seaweed for sea life.

Yes, I do love the carefree days of summer, the longer nights (definitely NOT the mosquitoes), dollar movies on Tuesday night, and Friday night Rock the Dock fireworks, which is free.

"Celebrate the celebration"

"People take pictures of the summer, just in case someone thought they had missed it,
and to prove that it really existed."

- Ray Davies

Kim, you are so lucky to live near the ocean...I often think the same thing myself: I hope people who live near the water realize what they have. I dream of living near the water someday...your photos are gorgeous!

Breathtaking! And I love the descriptions/phrases you've paired them with. I grew up near the ocean and now I'm landlocked. More's the pity!! :-(

Beautiful photos...as usual.

I'm always surprised at people who don't appreciate the place they are...especially, when that place is beautiful. Every place has it's beauty, if we want to see it.

Hope things are going well with you and your family.

Looking at these images makes me feel like I've just had a vacation at the beach . . . oh, I wish! You are so lucky to live as close as you do and even luckier that you appreciate it. I love the ocean and would love to live close to it but I have learned to love the desert as well. As Linda said above, each place has it's own beauty. The trick is to see and appreciate it!

Wonderful summer images! Sometimes I'm guilty of wishing I lived near the ocean or the mountains instead of being grateful for where I do live and what it has to offer! Thanks for the reminder!

I live about one half hour from the beach and I certainly don't get there often enough. Looking at these wonderful photos....and reading the quotes is inspiring me to get out there more often.
