Bucket List

by Linda

It seems I am always thinking about my next vacation (instead of making supper) and the vacation after that (instead of cleaning the house) and the vacation after that (instead of doing the laundry) and so on. I am focused on domestic travel as there is a wealth of destinations to explore, travel by car with a trailer in tow (Airstream dreams!)  no time tables, no deadlines, just get in the car and go, go, go! Nothing but blue sky and open road. Of course, the photographic appeal of each destination is a top requirement.

Researching destinations has certainly come a long way from the days of buy a map, follow the map and when you get there, stop at the Chamber of Commerce to get some info, or write to them beforehand and ask them to send info about the area. Now you can google a place and read all about it and see pictures of it. There's even a pretty cool app called "Stuck on Earth". It's an interactive and intuitive map app that changes as more pictures of places are added and as you travel to places or express interest in different places. It bills itself as "the ultimate guide for photographers, explores and daydreamers".  It's pretty good but not quite "ultimate" It's by Trey Ratliff and he usually does things right. It's available in the App Store and Google Play.

I subscribe to a magazine called Popular Photography (does anyone else still get magazines in the mail?) and the June 2014 issue arrived recently and it is a keeper. The cover says "50 Best Places In the World to Photograph, A travelers guide to capturing unforgettable images" They separated the destinations by type and each destination has a small bit about what is photo-worthy. There are places all around the world, there are quite a few located in the US and Canada. Yay!

Of course the Grand Canyon is on the list. I have been there and plan to go back. There are a few other places I have been to but missed the photo-bility of the area. Ever done that? Happens to me all the time! I must go back to these places!

For example, White Sands, New Mexico. I have been there. Looks like a lot of white sand. But the paragraph about White Sands tells you that the sand is actually white gypsum which makes the dunes glow against the sky. They recommend that you "time your visit for a full moon, then capture it at sunset as it rises."

(swoon)

As far as some of the other recommended places- Antelope Canyon in Arizona, Aurora Borealis in Fairbanks Alaska, Central Park in New York City, the Alps in Switzerland, Vatican City, and many other places, I have enjoyed viewing pictures of these places on flickr. Pictures from Antelope Canyon and the Aurora Borealis frequently appear on flickr's explore page. The pictures are amazing to see and something I want to see in person.

So, my bucket list continues to grow! So many places! So much to see!

What's on your bucket list?

(guess we'll just have take-out in this messy house! don't be like me!)

Ireland and Scotland are on top of the list for me. Places in the States, Gettysburg, Finger Lakes region in New York, go back to Maine, San Francisco other than at the airport.

I've been in almost every state in the US as a kid, but would love to revisit now as a photographer. Montana, the Dakotas and Oregon are places I haven't ever been and look forward to visiting some day. Spain and Greece are on my wish list, but I'm happy wherever we travel. In fact, I've recently become interested in Galveston and so look forward to visiting there this fall :)

We have a lot of places on our list. We`re checking them off, too. And, we're driving...not just flying over.
Our big one this year is Glacier National Park. It`s going to e quite a long drive. I'm betting there will be a few things I'll want to photograph, along the way. :)

So many places, so little time! I not only want to visit the places I've never been (Santa Barbara, Maine, Sanibel Island, Greece) but, as Judy said, to revisit places I've been to before but now with the eye of a photographer. This summer we have a trip planned to the same beach in San Diego we visited 17 summers in a row when my boys were growing up and am looking forward to discovering Galveston and the Gulf Coast with all my FOL sisters this fall.

I'm with you, so many places to see and visit, I would just love to travel to each and every place you listed. And driving is the best, that way you can stop anywhere, anytime!! Thanks for the info on the app!!

Forgot to say that Antelope Canyon is way up at the top of my bucket list -- and it's right here in my own state. No excuses!

Yes, I still subscribe to magazines, though I have cut way back. I found I was spending more time on photography, leaving less time for magazines. What you say is so true, Linda. Once we get cameras in our hands, the desire to travel just seems to follow. My list is long so I won't bore you. I'll just say that like the others, I am looking forward to Galveston in the fall, upcoming annual beach vacation, a cruise with my husband in September, and for next year, perhaps a family vacation to Paris and Italy ... all with camera in hand!

Yup long list. Banff and the ice train to Canada. Florence and Venice, Seattle, and more and more and more. Sigh

My bucket list is rather large... I do hope one day I can afford to see at least some places on that list!
