Sharing the Light

by Kelly

Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light
From now on, our troubles will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the yule-tide gay
From now on, our troubles will be miles away
Light hearts.  Troubles that are far away and out of sight.  Isn't that what we all want during the holidays?

Sadly that is so often not the case this time of year.  For many, the reality of the holiday season looks nothing like a Kay Jewelers commercial and sounds nothing like a cheesy Mariah Carey Christmas song.   Loss, illness, finances, war, stress...for many, this time of year it can be especially difficult to feel merry and bright.

Like Terri shared in her beautiful post yesterday, it is our duty as caring and compassionate human beings to share the light.  To do what we can to ease the sorrow and suffering of others.  And I think as photographers, we have a special gift and can accomplish this in a particular way.  Because what is the first thing we do when we go to take a photo?  Look for the light right?  Every time we bring the camera to our eye, the light comes pouring in.  And so therefore as light-seekers, we can also be light-sharers.

So here's the deal, I'm so totally not going to sit here and tell you that me sharing a few pictures of twinkle lights is going to ease the suffering in the world.  There is nothing about these pictures that is going to change the mind of a terrorist.  There is nothing about these photographs that will bring back a loved one or help someone find a job.  I wish it would.  Geez...I just so wish it would.

No...my hope by sharing the light through my photography, is that it serves as reminder of something bigger than ourselves.  Finding the light in my photography has changed my life profoundly. Learning to see things in new ways.  Discovering new perspectives.  Finding joy and peace in the middle of life's trials.....  All of it is because I found the light.  And it is my greatest honor and privilege to be able to share that with you.

I would just like to reiterate what Terri shared yesterday and urge you to look for the light this month. Find the light in your photos and then share them with all us.  Because the you have the gift and the world so desperately needs it.

Love, Kelly

Beautiful post,Kelly! When we have a beautiful holiday season, full of light and happiness, it is sometimes hard to remember that there are those who are struggling and even suffering. By sharing the light we each have within us, we could possibly lighten the burdens of those who are not so fortunate. Thank you for the reminder to share the light!

Wouldn't it be something if shared light could change the minds of evil. Beautiful post.

I could have sworn I commented on this earlier today but apparently it was only in my thoughts. Such a great post, Kelly, a timely reminder that we should look to those less fortunate and with bigger problems this season and try to share our inner light. Changing the world, helping people, takes one baby step after another until they add up and really make a difference. Isn't that what this season is all about?
