This Little Light of Mine

Aquinnah Light, Martha's Vineyard

Today it's my turn to run with the theme of the month - "Our Favorite Things."       One of my favorite things is to visit lighthouses.

Lighthouses are undeniably romantic. I think it has to do with isolation amongst beauty. They represent a place away from all distraction, a place where you would actually have the time to contemplate your surroundings.

Or maybe it has to do with their purpose - to protect our people, and keep safe our shores. They are a reminder of the power of Mother Nature and the caution we must use when cooperating with her.

I also like the way they present variations on a theme. They are all alike, and yet so individual.

I never chased lighthouses in a very organized way. Yet, when on vacation, or "down the shore," as we say in New Jersey, I never pass up the opportunity to photograph one. Recently I found a website that lists all lighthouses by state  (google maps, lighthouses of the USA).  Wouldn't it be fun to start checking off that list?

Come inspire me! Post your favorite lighthouse photos to our FOL Flickr pool, and tell me where I should go to visit them.  (use the button on the top banner, to the right,  to post)

Let your light shine on one of my favorite things!

(P.S.  Don't forget to label your images MFT - Lighthouses, so they can be considered for our INFOCUS spotlight)

Oh, Carol! I love lighthouses, have done ever since I was a child. One of my favorite "day trips" when we vacationed was to Montauk Point, LI. I've seen some of the lighthouses in your beautiful photos, too. Whenever we visit the East Coast(I'm in landlocked Kentucky now), we explore any nearby lighthouses. Ahhh ... now you've made me homesick for the coast. ... *sigh* ...

Thanks for a trip down memory lane!

Beautiful photos Carol! I never think much about lighthouses living in landlocked Oklahoma, but this post puts me on a mission to find one! It also makes me want to travel to the east coast even more :)

I didn't even know I had a "thing" for lighthouses until I took a trip down the Oregon Coast with my mom in 1999. By the time we stopped at the second one and it was completely different from the first, I was on a mission to see every single one all down the coast. They each had their own "personality" and I love that about them. Will have to go dig out some photos I took on that trip. Wonderful post and even more wonderful photos, Carol. Love!

Lovely Carol. I'm not sure I've ever been up close and personal with a lighthouse before.
Thank's for the great view.
Love Claudette

I am not surprised that Utah didnt have any lighthouses -- are you? :)

I especially love your stair shot and I think the last one is my favorite-- LOVE the silhouette.

Wish I had some to share with you... but alas, looks like I need to get traveling and shooting!

Hugs
Claudia

Lighthouses are so neat! There are lots of them along the Texas gulf coast and, believe it or not, there is a lighthouse on a lake here in land locked central Texas. It's really neat and has been well kept. It's privately owned and not open to the public but it is visible from the road.
Nice pictures, I like the one of the staircase.

Linda

I guess I didn't realize how many landlubbers we have here! I was worried about leaving Terri out, but I never thought about Utah and Canada and Kentucky! Sorry guys!
I thank you for the sweet comments, and glad I provided some memory lane moments! You guys will just have to come visit and I will take you to some great lighthouses!

What beautiful photos of the lighthouses, Carol! I especially love that last one with the burning orange.....gorgeous! Unfortunately, I have not spent much time on the coasts where there would be lighthouses, but I will live vicariously through your photos!

Lovely, lovely post on lighthouses. I have seen very few in my life, never lived near the ocean, and eventho I am somewhat close to Lake Michigan, I haven't really seen that many here either. Need to start looking for them more since they are a fascinating subject. Thanks for sharing your wonderful captures.
