The Unexpected

If you know me at all, you know that I LOVE photographing flowers.  I have been known to buy flowers for the sole purpose of taking their picture!

But one of my favorite things in photography is to shoot the unexpected, showing my viewer a different way of looking at things.  It can be as simple as changing my angle of view, shooting up, down or across something.  For example, the flower above is shot from underneath, not the typical view you usually see of a flower.  Read Stephanie's post here for more about perspective or Linda's post here about shooting from ground level.

Another way to shoot the unexpected when it comes to flowers is to shoot them before they bloom . . .

. . . as in this shot of an Icelandic poppy.

And here's the same Icelandic poppy after the petals have dropped.

A rose that's just a bit past it's prime.

To me, these shots are so much more compelling than the usual shot of this type of subject.  Finding a new way to shoot something will keep photography fresh and new for you.  Share with us in the Flickr group something shot from a different point of view or at a different stage than you normally see.  I can't wait to see your unexpected shots!

And remember, throughout April our theme is "My Favorite Things", whatever that might mean to you.  When you post to the Flickr group, make sure to tag your photos with MFT in order to have them considered for In Focus.  Have fun shooting!

Great post, and wonderful shots. I am a big fan of pics of flowers in their waning times.

You and me could be sisters I have decided because we both have such a passion for flowers. I also buy flowers for the sole purpose of my camera. Really more than I should but a girl has to do what she wants to and enjoy it.

Ah, yes! We could easily start either a flower photo club or a support group for people addicted to purchasing flowers for photography! Take your pick! (Pun intended.) And include me in both of them! Flowers are definitely one of my muses. And you're so right, Terri ... the unexpected can bring surprise, joy and excitement to our photography and, I might add ... our lives!

I have long admired you flower shots, Terri! Your focus is perfect! These are no exception!

It is fun looking at things with a new perspective. There is surprising beauty in every stage of a flower.

Linda
