A European Adventure

by Dotti

We began our epic adventure here, in Paris, the City of Lights ...

... and ended it here, in Rome, the Eternal City.

For three weeks, my husband, my daughter, my son-in-law, my granddaughter and I trekked through streets in two countries in Europe. And what an adventure it was! While I wish I could share with you many, many of my photos {most of which are still unedited}, I'll share just a few highlights with you so you can see some of what I saw through the lens of my camera.

We began in Paris. How many ways can you photograph what might possibly be the most photographed iconic landmark in the world?

From the waters of the Seine River we saw the beautiful architecture that makes Paris, well, Paris.

We spent an enchanting morning at Luxombourg Gardens.

From there we ventured to Venice. Ahhhh! Venice. A treat for all the senses. I even dabbled in street photography. Well, that's stretching it a bit. I was getting ready to take a photo of the marvelous fruit stand when the young attendant started mugging for me. Knowing a good thing when I see one and knowing I'd be too shy to ask, I was happy to take him up on his offer.

Of course, the canals in Venice captured my heart and my eyes. This one was right outside our apartment door.

About two-thirds of the way through my trip, I realized that I wasn't capturing the details I usually find through my lens but rather was painting with a broad stroke. I decided that was okay. It was that kind of trip, just so much sensory overload. But this one, captured on our gondola ride, was an exception.

And, finally, as we leave Venice, what could be more romantic than a Venetian canal in the twilight?

While in Venice, we visited the Venetian islands of Murano, famous for glass blowing, and Burano, famous for lace making. The color on these islands made my heart skip a beat. Or two.

Next stop, Florence. The cityscape from the Pitti Palace gardens was breathtaking with all those red tile roofs and the Tuscan hills beyond.

And the view riverside wasn't bad either.

Of course, there were winding, narrow streets everywhere we turned and I wanted to photograph each one. My family, however, had other ideas. That's probably a good thing or my EHD might have blown up.

After the crowded cities, we found a much-needed change of pace in Sorrento, on the famed Amalfi Coast. There are no words to describe the beauty we found here and sadly, not enough time to share with you even a morsel of what we found there. Again, here are the broadstrokes.

And, finally, the last place on our trip, Rome. I found the most amazing light in Rome from the morning light just outside our apartment window ...

... to the Roman Colosseum caught in the golden hour light.

There you have it, just a smidgeon of what I saw through my camera lens. I do hope you enjoyed it. I hope to share at more length soon on my personal blog but there are quite a few photos to work through first. And  as I always do for our special family occasions, I'll be making a photo book so we all have a tangible memory of the wonderful places we experienced together. This was truly a very special family adventure.

For the month of August, we will once again be doing our August Break. This allows all of us, readers and contributors alike, to soak up the last days of summer. We do hope you'll continue to visit us every day but the posts will be short and sweet, just like summer itself. We will once again have a color a week for our themes. The first week, beginning tomorrow, will be Orange(ish) the new black. Tune in Monday for more information and inspiration.

The Blue Hour

by Linda

Night photography is something I thought I rarely took part in. I have taken some shots of the moon and of course fireworks but other than photographing Halloween trick or treating and Christmas lights, I'm not out at night.

Or am I?

Weather permitting, I am up and out at the a$$ crack of dawn. Actually a bit before dawn on most days. Sometimes it's downright dark when I head out the door. I usually only have my phone with me and anticipate a sunrise but there have been many shots just pre-dawn in what is considered "the blue hour"

The blue hour occurs in the twilight of the day just before the sun rises and just after the sun sets. In the mornings it is the time when the sky magically turns from jet black to navy blue and all the lightening shades of blue until the sun rises and turns the sky into multi colored beauty and the golden hour begins. Or, at the end of the day, the golden hour will precede the blue hour and the sky will cascade through all the light blues to darkest blue to fade into the black of night.

It's quite the show, no matter which you choose to take in. It is worth the time, probably less than a half an hour, to watch the sky change.

There is a site that has all things blue hour and you can enter your location to find out what time blue hour is where you are. Click here for the site.

I hope you take in many blue hours. You won't be disappointed. Be sure to add your pictures to the gallery!

Focus on You

Sometimes a photograph can express what is in our hearts better than our words.  Barbara Carroll's heart-felt image pays a beautiful tribute to the victims of the recent tragedy in Canada....nature so often being a source of comfort and peace in times of trial.

As we wrap up October and the theme of twilight, we would like to extend our heart-felt thanks to all of you for sharing your beautiful images with us.  We are so grateful for your continued support.

Words

by Linda

"You too, my mother, read my rhymes
  For love of unforgotten times,
And you may chance to hear once more
The little feet along the floor."
  ~Robert Louis Stevenson

...

A photography tip I learned in Kim Klassen's Be Still class is about being still and contemplative as I prepare for a shot and as I look through the viewfinder. I find this practice also applies in other ways in life.

The internet has helped to bring us all a little closer together. We no longer have to wait for a letter in the snail mail or a telephone conversation, we can send out an email, text message, tweet, facebook or blog post. Instant communication. It's really wonderful to be able to reach out in so many ways in such a speedy manner.

Words are powerful. They can be filled with emotion. Filled with love or filled with animosity. Words can be felt by the listener and by the reader.

For me, the problem with all this lightning quick communication lies in the fact that the written word can take on different meanings. Meanings based on the emotion or situation of the reader. The message that is interpreted by the reader may sometimes be entirely different than the intent of the writer. Without a voice to place proper emphasis and emotion within the text, the reader is free to place the emphasis and emotion where they will and to define the message as they relate to the readers knowledge or place in life. Sometimes entirely not what the writer intended. And sometimes a degradation between parties can occur. The reader may feel insulted, abused or hurt by these words. If that was the intent of the writer, shame on then for hiding behind a computer to intentionally hurt another person.

But then, this is exactly why poetry is so wonderfully timeless and personal. We are free to make each verse our own. We are free to claim any emotion we feel as we read it. We can define the verse to our own experiences. If you have ever been to a poetry reading, and heard one of your favorite verses read, you may have come away with a different feeling other than the one you had when you read it yourself.

I think we all know how powerful spoken words can be. A parent knows well that their words can make a tremendous impact on a child. We know to calm down before speaking and choose our words carefully. And we know to say the most powerful words "I love you" and "you're so smart! beautiful! talented!" often and with meaning to our children.

As powerful as written and spoken words are, even so are the words that are not spoken. Imagine thinking back over your own life and not having a memory of ever hearing those most powerful words from your own parent.

Even a "thank you" every now and then is a really nice thing to say, to write or to hear.

So think a moment before you speak. Stop a moment before you send out a tweet, an email or text message, a facebook or blog post.

Are these the words you really want someone to feel?

...

Can you believe October is almost over! Don't forget to add your twilight shots to the gallery!

And have a happy and spooky Halloween!

Letting go...often it's a hard thing to do.

This beautiful photo by Leanne, captures that feeling so beautifully.  The delicate way they droop just before they fall.  The bare branches left behind.  I suppose it could be looked upon as a sad thing. But in the letting go of Autumn, we are filled with the hope of new life in Spring.

Thank you all so very much for continuing to share your beautiful images with us.  We have another week to go with our theme 'twilight'.  Show us how you see the magic of Autumn.

Happy Saturday!

Worth a Thousand Words

by Susan

At first I was going to just title this post, 'No Title' and then realized after writing the post... I did indeed have a title. After sitting at this computer for the past several hours going through tens of hundreds of photos, all from our FOL Galveston trip, I was at a loss as what to 'focus on' for my post.  My brain seriously felt... fuzzy... like I'm still trying to process everything from last weeks gathering... too quickly.  Does that make sense?  Have you ever had that moment when you have soooo much to talk about that you just don't know where to begin? That's where I am...

We've all heard the saying 'a photograph is worth a thousand words' right?  I was finding it difficult to find the words to express my gratitude (and it is beyond great) for this past gathering... so I'm going to let my photographs help me out here and speak for themselves.

Carol and Kelly - ready to go! And yes, we did travel like this... well... once. :)

Kelly and Leigh... one, two three JUMP! Not bad at 7:00am in the morning!

To my FOL sisters... thank you, thank you for all the inspiration, laughs, tears, hugs, early morning rises and late night talks... and on and on.  I love you all and will always remember our time together!  ~ xo's

If I Had Only Known Then.

by Kelly

New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings. ~Lao Tzu

I was just going to be empty for a while.

This was the conclusion I had come to while standing there in the middle of my daughter's empty bedroom. She had been away at college just over two months and I was having an empty-nest meltdown of epic proportions.

If I had only known then.

If I had only known then that photography class I was signed up for would change the way I see the world.

If I had only known then how photography would change the way I see myself.

If I had only known then that I would come to know so many amazing women.  Some on different journeys, but a passion for living just the same.

If I had only known then that many of these beautiful souls would become my friends.

If I had only known then that Dotti would reach out to me one day and ask me to be part of this family.

If I had only known then how I would come to cherish these sisters of mine.

If I had only known then that one day I we would no longer be 'online' friends.  But rather, real friends.  Friends in real life.

If I had only known then the joy it would bring to be sharing this passion with my friends.  To be connected to them in a profound way.

If I had only known then.

I'm not quite sure if I will ever have exactly the right words to express how much these women and this community means to be.  But just so you know...it has made all the difference.

I am forever grateful.

Love, Kelly

Focus on You

If you have not yet had the opportunity to visit the FOL Flickr pool, it is absolutely bountiful with inspiring sunsets and glorious fall color.  Which makes my job of choosing one photograph to share with you today even harder.

This week's selection is by the incredibly talented Anita.  I am such a huge fan of the way she captures the light and am inspired by her use of black and white.  In this shot however, she captured all of the colorful glory of a stormy sunset.  The colors are beautiful of course, but I also love the energy in the silhouette and how it is reflected in the unsettled weather.

Thank you all so much for continuing to share your art with our community.  We are forever grateful for your continued support.
