Potato - Potahto

Lampshade
The Chalfonte Hotel

A few weeks ago, I asked Theresa Hood to guest blog on our site. (see The Glassblowers, April 27) As Terry discussed individuality, she asked us if we had ever gone shooting with other photographers. She said that  if you had, you would see that  "you can have five people standing side-by-side shooting the same subject and you will leave with five different interpretations."

Well, guess what? A few weeks later, we had just that!  I'm sure you're all sick to death of hearing about Nancy Ori's Workshop in Cape May   (dev.nancyoriphotography.com/workshops
that I have attended for the past three years, but that is where Terry and I met. We also met our shooting buddy Susan Alexander (Mills) there.  In subsequent years, Michele Yacavello and Bettina Bell (names you might recognize from Shutter Sisters, Prompt Addicts or Picture This) "heard" us talking about it on-line, and joined us!

Every day at the workshop we were out on assignment, often shooting the same things. So I asked if everyone would allow me to use one of their shots to illustrate Terry's point on FOL. The results are really interesting - some saw potato, and some saw potahto - and each is great in it's own way! (hint - follow the tourists with the umbrellas!) Without further ado, here is what happens when five photographers point their cameras at the same thing!

Today, share your passion with somebody!  Invite a friend to be your shooting buddy and make an afternoon of it. Or post some shots from a location you shared with someone in the past. (I know many of you have been to workshops.) If you have not, think about inviting someone on-line. Once I was having trouble using a texture in Prompt addicts and Ellen Morgan asked me to send it to her for her help. She textured it her way and we posted them both, and got lots of comments.

My photo buddies and I (we jokingly call ourselves "The F-Stop Gang!") have found many more opportunities for fun and learning by pooling our resources. We regularly share photos, articles, sales, classes and whatever else we can find. FOL is a community too!  Let us know about anything you find that we all might enjoy. And continue to contribute to our family in our monthly themes and Flickr pool. Allow us the pleasure of getting to know you :)

TODAY- IN OUR FLICKR POOL -SHARE THE LOVE !

What a fun, fun post! I love the five perspectives of the same thing. So very revealing! One of my goals when I retired last December was to start up a local gals photo group since I know about 6 who are also avid photogs. As usual, I've procrastinated. This is great inspiration for me to get my act in gear and my camera in focus!

Thanks, Carol!

First let me say that I love my F-Stop Sisters! I feel very lucky to have found all of you. This was a fun exercise. I often shoot with a friend and we find that even when we split up or walk in different directions there is always one shot that we both capture the same way. I encourage all of you to get out there and find a shooting buddy or buddies.

Wonderful post, Carol! Over the past year I've had the chance to go on photo adventures with one or more other photographers and found it so interesting that we could all be looking at the same thing and yet capture it in different ways. It is so rewarding to be able to share your passion with other people who are just as passionate about it as you are. Camp Shutter Sisters last October was my first opportunity to do this and it was life-changing. Then in March I spent the day with Deanna and Barbara Carroll and found it equally inspirational and rewarding. In April, I met up with Stephanie and Leigh in Dallas and again was amazed at how we instantly were in synch with each other and yet captured so many things in our own way. I'm going to Camp Oasis this October and am looking forward to that same comaraderie. There's just nothing like being able to share your passion with others who feel the same way.

That's why we call you Miss Congeniality, Terri! I love that you are jumping in and meeting everyone! I just wish we lived closer so we could meet too - but, it's in the cards someday, for sure! Have a great time at camp - and I expect to see some major results from you all!

this was so fun! my sister and i and our husbands went to Europe last summer. she is an avid photographer too. we would come back to the apartment at night and download our photos only to find that we took many of the same shots but from totally different perspectives. looks like you ladies had tons of fun!

I typically shoot by myself . . . but had the awesome opportunity to go out with Deanna when she visited Galveston and had tons of fun! But I do like to work a scene and always worry that if I go with a group I will either lag them down or not be able to get my best shot if I feel hurried. Love the comparison shots, and yes I'm jealous that they are going to camp too Carol!!

Kim,
I always feel that way about shopping with women, and I am a bit of a loaner - but we have NEVER had a problem. In fact it's usually the other way around - we would all stay in one spot til midnight, if one of us didn't fall asleep! When you are of like minds, you're all in the same boat, and we just spread out, and meet up if one is really concentrating. Or sometimes you're just in a different head - today is for comraderie, tomorrow for technicality. As they used to say in that old ad - try it, you'll like it!

I ususally am out shooting alone. I'm pretty shy and it's not easy for me to aproach other groups and photographers. I get out 3-4 times a year with my sister on photo shoots. Only problem there, we talk too much and giggle and laugh. We have fun and sometimes don't get home with a lot of pictures. I wouldn't trade our closeness for pictures though; we make a lot of memores!!

It looks like you had so much fun! I like how you showed the different perspectives of the same shot! Isn't that amazing! It just goes to show that you can never take too many pictures! Everyone see things in unique and different ways!

Linda

Love it that you call yourselves the F-Stop Gang! It was great seeing everyone's images, with slight differences among each. I have found the same thing - shooting the same thing with a photo buddy, and getting different, sometimes very different final shots! Love this Carol.

And that's infinitely more important!

It is a bit less obvious in this shot, because it's iconic, and if it weren't for the tourists, it might have been more similar. I love the times when we get completely different things out of the same scene - one macro, a crop, one from standing high, or lying down - somethimes it's really radically different.

After a few days, it's almost a slumber party silly - hence the name! We get a little goofy! Glad you like it! It makes us smile!

What fun to see the different perspectives! I had the pleasure of joining a photo meetup with some on-line friends, meeting in person for the first time. We walked, talked, and took photos together....we had a great time! It was so interesting to see what each person was drawn to capture.

Isn't it?

It is so great having a photo buddy to share your passion with. I have a buddy that shares my passion so I certainly can see how we can look at something and she see something totally different than I do. And as mentioned earlier I had the very great pleasure of having meet-ups with both Terri and later with Kim which were both totally awesome experiences. I love how one will see something I totally missed and vice-versa. That is the beauty of photography, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Keep enjoying those photo trips with your F-Stop Gang.
