A connection of the natural kind . . .

"Beauty in things exists in the mind which contemplates them"
- David Hume

Have you ever sat with your pencil and journal and had sooo many things to say that nothing was really being written with true clarity?  Well sometimes it's just as much of a curse to have so many things on your mind rather than nothing at all.

I think I started about three different things about my thoughts on connections, each one taking a different rabbit trail . . . I just couldn't decide where I was going with any of them. That is until a dragonfly handed me a glass of V-8 juice. . .

It was in my quandary of what I was going to end up writing that I got up from my comfy spot on my favorite sofa, in my favorite room of the house, and went to the front porch. Upon taking literally 3 steps toward the chair to sit down, a dragonfly just appeared and as I stood there it came over to me and hovered at eye level, looking straight at me, and for a moment time just.. stood.. still.

How could I have missed it? Because not only does nature simply fascinate me, but I feel intensely connected to it with a desire to share what I find in hopes of sparking a love in others. Because it's hard to get someone to take care of something that they either don't understand and or love.

I took this next photo last fall on one of my walks through the coastal birding trail. It was enjoying some lantana and as I got closer and closer I was amazed that it wasn't flying away. Monarchs aren't one of those butterflies that you can usually get really close to, so you can imagine my surprise when as I got closer and closer, finally offering out my hand, that she freely walked on to it.

Or another time at the very same place when I had spied a green anole and was able to get close enough to slip my hand under the leaf she was on without her going into flight mode....and coax her onto my finger.

The green anoles that live and thrive on my front porch have almost like clockwork, come to pay me a visit when I'm outside with my coffee in the mornings, almost as curious about me as I am about them. And it was about 2 years ago when I was gardening that a three toed box turtle walked right in front of me on a little pathway. She stayed for about a month, and when she heard my voice she would always come and find me, but I never heard from her again after a tropical storm came through.

When it comes to nature I lose all track of time, but always, always feel better for having spent time in it, and the more time I spend, the more connected I feel. I have always secretly wished that I could talk to the animals, but I'll gladly take the silent cues from my friends the dragonflies.

Why don't you share some of your favorite things in nature that you feel connected to in our Flickr Group, tagged with connected. Who knows you just might be our next InFocus selection of the week.

Happy Tuesday!

Oh, my! What a wonderfully inspiring post, Kim! I've concluded that you most be a very gentle and patient soul for all these precious little critters to come to you and "connect" to you the way they do. That is a special gift, make no mistake. I can tell it's something you cherish.

Lovely.

Your photos are soooo connected to your love and passion. Each one is composed perfectly but tells a story . The light is spot on. BUT your love of nature is what I always feel feom your photos. Your personal connection is lovely to see. Butterflies are very few where I live... Or maybe it's just me, but I hardly ever see them. I will keep on the look out as I know it will be well worth my wait.

Hugs!

I so agree with you that connecting with nature is so rewarding. I love animals of all kinds and I am always amazed by people who are afraid of getting close to things. I have a friend who has baby bobcats (and their mother) come every spring and I always tell her I would die of pure pleasure if I ever had that happen to me. You say you wish you could talk to the animals, but they are definitely hearing you and showing you that they are. Not everyone can get a Monarch butterfly to land on their hand! Wonderful photos, Kim, and a wonderful post. Getting out in nature as well as being able to photograph it is one of the most rewarding and calming things we can do. One of these days I'm going to come and join you!

Thank you Dotti, there are so many other things I should have shared too, but I waited til the last minute to finish this and could hardly keep my eyes open! When my daughter was in the fourth grade I took 3 of my eight birds and my snake (yes) to all eight classes and shared stories with them. I felt like I was in my element, but I will never forget the thank you note from a little girl...she told me I had a special gift and that there were special plans for me. A fourth grader said that! I have always wondered what it was she saw or felt....

Oh thank you so much Claudia...being present taking the photo it is always hard to know if I was successful in passing on the emotion of the moment to the viewer. I haven't noticed as many butterflies my way either and I planted my garden so that I would attract more? But next year I am planting lavender, after seeing how attracted they were at that lavender farm!!

Oh Terri, before we moved here my son said to me one morning, mom there is something in the backyard and I'm pretty sure it's not a cat. Well, it was two, but they were bobcats...and they all forbid me to go outside and take a closer look! ha Wouldn't that be fun if you could all come down and we could stroll the beach and the coastal trail together!

And the neighbor kids always come and get me if they find something, lol. One day one of the neighbor kids knocked on my door and had something wrapped in a towel...a pigeon had flown into his window and died and the first thing he thought of was to bring it to me? ; )

Beautiful photos Kim! I feel such a strong connection to nature...I guess that's why I chose a career in landscape design and then photography just flowed naturally from that.
