Book Lovers Never Go To Bed Alone

Here's what I love about winter - snow days, fireplaces glowing, warm slippers, and Christmas books! Or stacks and stacks of old magazines! The Sunday New York Times! And now my favorite bloggers.

I am almost as passionate about books as I am about photography. For me, reading is a lifestyle. Although I ski and hike now, when I was a kid, winter meant not having to go out, but getting lost in a family saga, inspired by a strong heroine, or travelling to a different place or time. I still often wake up at 2 A.M. with a book stuck to my face, or a Kindle jabbing my ribs.

Lately, my FOL sisters and I have been trading book lists, and I thought maybe some of you might have some to add to the list. Would you enjoy posting a book picture in Flickr and noting in the caption one of your recent or favorite reads? Or maybe setting up a photo that would make a great book cover? That way we'd all get to enjoy a peaceful image and get a book recommendation at the same time!

And for your enjoyment - here is a list, published by www.goodreads.com, of some of the winners of this year's Independent Book Blogger Awards:

I have recently enjoyed "Broke and Bookish," where they had list of favorite literary quotes. I found the 'Feminist Reads Challenge' on "The Hiding Spot" blog to be a fun idea. And I love listening to Books on the Nighthstand . And following that is an article from The Wallstreet Journal choosing the best book podcasts of the year.

Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend.
Inside of a dog it's too dark to read.

Oh, thanks for this! I'm always looking for good book blogs - there are just so many out there! I've added some of these to check out.

I'm a real bookworm -- am a member of two book groups, so I am reading all the time. I hadn't heard or Books on the Nightstand -- that sounds like fun! Love that Groucho quote!

I come from a long line of readers and nothing gives me more pleasure than knowing that I've passed this love of good books and stories onto my daughter and granddaughter. Every day after school, my granddaughter (5 y/o) wants me to read her a couple of chapters of Nancy Drew. Yeah! You read that right ... Nancy Drew. We've read about 15 of them over the past year. She can hardly wait until she can read "chapter books" ... and I predict it won't be long.

Thank you so much for the new resources for great reading material, Carol!

I love books too and it's always so great to get some good recommendations of books to read. One summer I was doing a lot of traveling and ended up on a cross-country flight carrying two large hard-backed books, one I hadn't quite finished and one in case I finished the first one during the flight (can't run the risk of having nothing to read!) After that trip, I came home and ordered a Kindle. I do love it for traveling but there is just something about opening a new book, the smell, the feel of the pages, the ability to turn back easily and reread something, that the Kindle can't match. But the biggest reason is the ability to hand a well-loved book on to someone else to read. Can't do that with the Kindle! Will be watching for some good recommendations here as I'm in need of something new to read. Thanks, Carol!

Oh lovely books are my joy, When I buy a new bag it has to be big enough to hold a book! I am always looking for new titles.

I've always loved that quote. :)

I used to read ALL the time. I guess I still do, only now it's mostly blogs. I really need to get back to BOOKS. There are many out there I need to catch up on.

Thanks for the links.

Thanks for putting this together! I love to read and have a hard time choosing a book. I like getting reviews from from other readers before taking the plunge!

I read on my iPad only out of desperation. I love the physical-ness of a book, and one of my favorite smells in the whole world is the smell of a library or a used bookstore. My daughter takes it one step further: as soon as she walks in to either place, she'll stop for a couple seconds, close her eyes and inhale for as long as she can. I love that about her and I love how much she loves reading. I can't imagine a life without books. Beautiful photos, Carol.

What a beautiful post and reading & books are part of my make-up. Ever since I got my kindle I have missed the feel, the smell, the look of a book. Eventho books are cheaper (sometimes) and definitely more convenient, I still need a book. Looking at a book beside my bed vs looking at a kindle....no comparison. Thanks for all the wonderful book info and that top photo looks like a lotta hands have touched those books.

Aw! That's a nice romantic notion - picturing all the people who have held those books - I love it!

Thanks Terri - My daughter tells me there is a way to share kindle books - but I certainlyl haven't figured it out yet! I love that we all love books - maybe we're a dying breed , but I hope not - because I sure get alot of pleasure out of reading. Try the book I recommended to Deanna below - I loved that one.

I got my love of reading from my mother. We used to share books and then talk about them: our very own mother-daughter book club. One of our favourite things to do together was to go spend and hour (or two) in a bookstore and then pair that up with a nice lunch. I miss her intensely since she died. I read alone now ... actually it took me almost two years after she died before I could read again. My favourite books this year have been (in no particular order): "The Help" "A Thousand Splendid Suns" (the Kite Runner was the last book my mom and I both read before she died so I finally had the nerve to pick up thousand suns this month) "Left Neglected" (oh you MUST read her first novel, "Still Alice" if you haven't already!

I adore all of these photos Carol, just beautiful! I'm not much of a novel type reader, but give me an inspirational book, or a book of poems and I'm good. But I will check these out for sure, thank you!
