Springing to Life

by Leigh

I'm sure you have all heard that Terri, Kelly and I met up at the Dallas Arboretum a couple weeks ago for Dallas Blooms.  Terri talked about the unexpected, yet perfect weather conditions.  Yesterday Kelly joined us here at FOL (Thanks Kelly!) and talked about how three different photographers can be shooting the same subject matter yet each photo is unique to that person.  And today I'm focusing on the details of the day.   The gardens are overwhelmingly beautiful.  Each flower, plant and tree were selected for a particular reason.  They were chosen for their color, their bloom time, their texture, their hardiness, their ability to pair with similar plants.  There is just so much thought put into the design of these gardens.  I immediately fell in love with the tulips above not only for their pinky red and yellow petals, but also for the shape of the petals.

The container plantings were full to the brim with color as seen in one of my favorite flowers Ranunculus.  Other containers were a combination of dainty, bloom filled flowers with soft foliage just begging to be touched.   I took notes in the form of photographs to try and replicate some of the beautiful combinations for my clients.

Tulips are traditionally planted in October/November and they come up amidst the pansies that are planted in the fall so color pallet is important.  The color combinations were fantastic!  Look at the yellow tulips with the pansies in various shades of purple.

The gardens were like a visual symphony....a treat for all the senses.  The Columbine, although dainty and rather small, were a showstopper.  I could not walk by without taking it's picture.

The most wonderful aspect of the trip was not only spending it with two lovely friends, but also sharing our passion for photography with each other.  We took our time to walk through and notice the little things.

Has Spring sprung in your neck of the woods yet?  We are focusing on Spring this month and can't wait to see your photos in our Flickr group.

What breathtaking photos, Leigh! Magnificent work. This was truly a busman's holiday for you, wasn't it? But I know you loved it and came home with new ideas to add to your arsenal. Thanks for the personal Arboretum tour!

Great photos, and I appreciate you sharing them because spring is maybe, kind of, sort of thinking about coming here in NY. I have two crocus that have bloomed. Whoo hooo. But I know - good things take time, and spring will eventually get here.

Oh, Leigh, your photos just take me back to that beautiful place and our wonderful day! I couldn't even imagine, although I know you could, how much work went into creating that beautiful garden. To think that each of those thousands upon thousands of tulip bulbs have to be planted all over again each year just amazes me! Love that adorable shot of the ladybug too! Spring is here in the desert and I'm looking forward to sharing it with a few friends this week on some photowalks.
