Mornings

by Carol H.

She sits in the breakfast room sipping her coffee in the stillness of the early morning. She has always been an early riser. Her mind planning out the day: going to work, what she will do there, coming home and making dinner (what will we have?), ironing clothes in the evening. After awhile she begins to hear movement from the other room. Young footsteps come down the hall and into the bathroom. Toilet flush, then feet-shuffle into the kitchen. He grabs a bowl from the cabinet and pours in the cereal and milk, then joins her in the breakfast room. She watches him without saying a word. He is not a morning person so conversation is not his strong suit this early in the day. His spoon taps the side of the bowl as the smell of the whole grain goodness of Cheerios wafts in the air. Suddenly he is up, cereal bowl on the counter, and he jumps into the shower. Moving quickly now he is dressed and heading out the door. “Have a great day,” she says. “Ok, I love you” he replies. Then he is out the door, down the stairs, heading toward his new day.

I am still an early riser. Our son is grown and living in his own place now. These days it is just me, Brian, and our 3-legged cat Peg. My favorite place to sit is the living room, sipping my coffee, reading MarkNepo’s “The Book of Awakening”, and writing my morning pages. After awhile I begin to hear movement from the other room…

Love these images, both the visual ones of the bowl and the ones painted with words.

Only had one cup and had to delete because it wasn't making sense after I posted. Ugh. I meant to say before my senior moment was that I love the cereal bowl image so much. You are so darn creative my dear. Inspiration up to kazoo.

the peace of early morning is my favorite time of day. i can't put words around what it feels like to sit outside, no matter the temperature, with my cup of tea and listen to the sounds of early morning and the sunrise on a day.

Love your photos and love that Anthropologie bowl! They are so sweet. And your account of mornings past is wonderful.I'm not a morning person by nature; my husband is. Now that I'm retired, I enjoy my mornings. I don't get up with the sun but neither do I linger into the day. I enjoy taking my mornings at my own pace, breakfast on the back porch, that cup of tea as I watch the birds and squirrels. {Oh, my! I'm turning into my grandmother!} Always with camera near by because you just never know when beauty might cross your path.

I just love the softness of your images! They say "morning" without you even telling us when they were taken. Mornings are so different now than when there were children in the house -- like Dotti said, I can go at my own pace and I do enjoy that. A little coffee, the crossword puzzle and a little blog reading help me ease into my day.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. Dotti was right, the bowl is from Anthropologie and related to the cup that Kim Klassen made famous! The softness was created with the application of one of Kim's texture layers entitled "Kim Klassen Love".

A peaceful scene and a wonderful memory. Most of my mornings are a little rushed, but I do enjoy those rare times where I'm up before the rest of the house, enjoying quiet time and a cup of coffee or tea.

I am a morning person too! I love to check the computer while I drink coffee than head out to tend the chickens and feed the cats. After that, I help the Husband outside or work on a cooking/baking or house project.

Ahh mornings on the back porch with my cup of coffee and the newspaper...yeah I am still old fashioned, love the feel of that newsprint and actually reading printed instead of digital. Yes, I do love that dreamy morning bowl of cerealimage, just feels comforting.
