Rainy Days

by Leigh

Waking up to the pitter patter of rain drops on the roof usually make me snuggle deeper under my covers and snooze longer.  Then there are those days that I jump at the chance to take some photos after the rain…especially at the beginning of spring when bare branches begin to give way to budding leaves.  The smell of rain still lingers as I venture outside to see what treasures await.

The sunless sky makes shooting in the middle of the day possible as the colors appear even more saturated than normal. The beauty of shooting after the rain is that everything is glistening.  This glistening effect can elevate an otherwise mundane photo and increase the depth in an image.  Why is this? "The water reflects the light in multiple directions and intensities and this optical phenomenon gives distinctive and definitive shape to whatever happens to be wet and falls within your line of sight." so there…now we know:)

And last but not least…my favorite thing about shooting after the rain is the opportunity to catch some beautiful reflections in the puddles of water.  Don't let a little rain stop you from getting outside with your camera.  You may be amazed at the surprises you find.

It's been raining here quite a bit and I am beginning to see little signs of Spring. You're just that far ahead of us that I can enjoy yours before mine!

Rain is such a rarity here that I rarely get the pleasure of shooting after the rain (we haven't had measurable rain since January 31!) But when we do get some rain, I'm with you about getting out and capturing the beauty. That raindrop bokeh in your first photo should be enough to encourage anyone to get out and take some photos and I know from the couple of trips we took to the Dallas Arboretum that the rainy, overcast days do wonders for colors. Not much fun to be out in but the rewards are many! Thanks for sharing this little taste of your spring. And now I shall be praying for some rain!

Beautiful. Spring is still very far away here. Once it stops snowing, I'll look for puddles. Your clouds in the puddle is really lovely.

Oh, so true, Leigh! We photographers always long for sunshine but the reality is that after the rain and slightly overcast days give us the best light - and certainly the most flattering light for portraits. Your photos are a delight. We're just slightly behind you. This morning I walked the yard looking for buds, checking trees and shrubs to make sure they'd made it through the winter. Ahhh! I love this time of year!

These photos are proof that we don't need golden hour light to make magic. Beautiful!

After the rain is such a delightful time to be outside. I love all the sparkle from the rain and look at those lovely tulips! Beautiful!
